There may be a need to take more radiographs but usually two are sufficient. At one’s very first consultation a panoramic x-ray may be taken as well. Cost = R258.30
X-ray surveys are done to detect decay between the teeth. Some x-rays may detect pathology at the tip of a tooth’s root. Panoramic x-rays will show up problems in the bone as well as impacted teeth like wisdoms.
The scaling removes plaque and calculus from the tooth and debris between the teeth as well as below the gum line. This is done to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis.
Polishing is done to remove tea, coffee and tobacco stains and smooth rough areas that are prone to accumulate plaque.
The flouride application serves to strengthen the enamel and dentine structure. It also has anti-bacterial properties.
NOTE: Although there is no negative impact of scale and polishing the teeth, if one has a defective heart valve or has had rheumatic fever, it is imperative to have a bolus dose of antibiotics prior to the appointment.
